There are two states to this image. The first shows the negative in its entirity before it was trimmed in to the portrait of Orrente and allows us to see how the photographer secured the portrait so that it would stay still during the photographic exposure. This was necessary as the photograph would have been taken outdoors, in direct sunlight, at risk from any passing breeze. So, all four corners of the portrait have been pinned to a board which has been lined with the cover page from a 'Punch's Almanack'.

The second state shows the image after the negaitve was trimmed in to the portrait of Orrente, thereby removing the extraneous pins or tacks used to keep the portrait steady.
