This object is part of Schaaf no. 5039

Copy of an engraving, a monk in a Gothic interior

Keywords: Architecture

This image is related to Schaaf number 570.

The image shows a monk in a Gothic interior. He stands beside a latticed window. There appears to be a female figure on the other side of the window, as if the two are conversing. This monk may be about to break his vow of celibacy.

On first appearances Schaaf numbers 570 and 5039 look as if they might be the same, but close inspection of the dimensions and the actual images shows that they it is more likely that they are two variants generated or copied from the same original artwork.

The main Gothic arch in Schaaf number 570 is more complete than that in Schaaf 5039. Similarly, the number of flagstones on the floor is greater in Schaaf 570 than in Schaaf 5039. As Schaaf 570 (the negative) has more detail than is evident in Schaaf 5039 (the positive print), one cannot have been used to generate the other.
