Mentmore Towers under construction

Keywords: Architecture Scaffolding

Mentmore Towers in Buckinghamshire was built to the designs of Sir Joseph Paxton and his son in law George Henry Stokes for Baron de Rothschild. The presence of scaffolding shows that the house was still under construction when it was photographed. So, the photograph must have been taken some time between 1852 and 1854, when the house was built.

The architectural inspiration for the building's design was the 16th century, Wollaton Hall in Nottingham.
