The engraving is a copy of an oil painting of Queen Victoria's eldest daughter, Victoria, Princess Royal. The original oil painting dates from 1842 when she was two years old and is held by the Royal Collection Trust (inventory number RCIN 403056). There are no known salt prints from this calotype negative, but Talbot must have taken this photograph of the original engraving some time after 1842.
