The Radcliffe Camera from All Souls College, Oxford

Location: Oxford

The Radcliffe Camera (‘camera’ being the Latin for ‘room’) was designed in the Neoclassical style by the architect, James Gibbs (1737-49). The building is named after John Radcliffe (c. 1652–1714) the benefactor of the University of Oxford who funded its construction.

This view has been taken from the North Quadrangle of All Souls College and shows the western range of College’s cloisters.  The gateway and cupola in the middle distance were designed by the architect, Nicholas Hawksmoor (c. 1661-1736).
