The view is of Mary-le-Port Street as seen from the High Street. The gas lamp on the right hand side of the street marks the west end of Buttermarket Passage. Further along the street there is just visible a half timbered house which would have faced the old Cheese Market. The furniture store, Laverton & Co was also located nearby and is just visible on the right, towards the far end of the street.
