The Tudor Courtyard, Lacock Abbey

Attributed to: William Henry Fox Talbot

Location: Lacock Abbey

This view of the Tudor Courtyard was taken from an upper window of a room used by servants. Possibly a pantry, or storage for a butler or housekeeper.

The latticed window that has been left open at the side of the image is of the pulpit room, which later became Matilda Talbot’s bedroom. The same window, also open, can be seen from a different angle in Schaaf numbers 1138 and 1139.

The windows with square panes facing the camera are of a small dressing room that opens into the Tapestry Bedroom.

Most of what can be seen in this photograph is the north end of the house which overlooks the Tudor Courtyard.
