The Oracle gate was the entrance to a workhouse built to help poor clothiers. The gate was demolished along with the rest of the workhouse in 1850. There are three figures in the photograph but only two of them stood still long enough to be seen clearly during the long photographic exposure. The third blurred figure moved so that his ghostly outline can be seen twice in the shadow of the gate, but didn't stay still long enough to appear clearly in the final photograph.
